Introduction to the Texas LEVEL Test
The LEVEL Test was developed by Bannon & Associates for the use of law enforcement agencies located in Texas for the purpose of ascertaining the competency or eligibility of candidates seeking the position of a Texas Peace Officer or any entry-level position in law enforcement in that particular state.
The test is designed in a way that complies with the guidelines created by the Employment Opportunity Commission and the American Psychological Association.
It was created in a bid to make sure that all prospective Texas Peace Officer or law enforcer candidates have the minimum job-related skills that are crucial for every officer to have in order for them to do their job effectively, both in an office environment and while on the field.
These skills were selected and compiled so that they are applicable to Texas Peace Officers in large, medium, and small enforcement agencies representing Municipal, County, University, College, and Airport Police.
The LEVEL Test is used by many law enforcement agencies in Texas due to its reliability and accessibility. Due to the number of subjects contained within it, the exam may cost candidates precious time and money if they take it unprepared.

What does the Texas LEVEL Test Include?
The Texas LEVEL Test contains seven sections with questions spread to form a 100-item multiple choice test that is to be answered by the applicant within two and a half hours.
Although the exam itself is mostly focused on assessing your understanding of the English language as well as your reading comprehension skills, it also assesses if you have sufficient mathematical skills as well as situational judgment skills.

As a future Peace Officer, you will be tasked to not only provide law enforcement services to the American public at large but also to accurately and properly write and understand police and incident reports, something that an officer may do in a regular, if not daily, basis.
Writing reports requires the officer to write everything down in perfect grammar, capitalization, spelling, punctuation, and syntax, and in a way that is easily understandable by their intended reader/s.
Any mistake done in the report could prove disastrous in the long run as either the wrong person could be brought to court due to a spelling color in their name or due to the wrong address or car plate number being written in the report.
Reading comprehension is included because the inverse can be done, meaning the applicant, should they become a Texas Peace Officer, must be able to understand such reports in addition to memos, procedures, or even mere instructions given to them by their superiors.
Mathematical/Arithmetic Ability
This skill is assessed because officers will have to perform basic or rudimentary calculations in their day-to-day activities such as making sure that their patrol car has enough gas for the trip for the day and back to the station or if it needs refueling, among other things that need calculating.
Differential Decision-making
Sometimes called the Problem Sensitivity or Situational Judgement Test, questions here will come in the form of a passage containing a conflict or misunderstanding of sorts where the examinee will be put in the shoes of an officer and is tasked to try and resolve the incident.
This will be done by providing the test-taker with a number of courses of action whose effectivity will vary from one another and it will be up to them to pick which one they believe is the most appropriate one for the situation.
Although you do not need to be familiar with police procedures to answer this portion of the exam since the questions are designed to follow a ‘common sense-based’ line of reasoning, most of the questions contain choices where all of them seem like the correct ones.

Depending on what they find, this could shoot down your application completely or make the interview portions more difficult if they see something of concern.
