What Are the Wonderlic Test Question Types?
The Wonderlic test has four parts: General Knowledge, Abstract Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Numerical Reasoning. Test administrators use your results to predict how well you will perform in the job position you have applied for. An employer may choose to administer specific sections or all the sections of the test.
Let’s take a deeper look into what each test measures.
The Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test
Employers from a wide variety of industries use this test when recruiting and selecting new employees. Their aim is to measure the candidate’s ability to learn, problem-solve, adapt, and understand directions.
The questions on the Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test are presented in an open-response manner. The questions get harder as the test-taker approaches the end of the test. The sort of questions can vary, but they typically include the following subjects:
- Math questions
- Following directions
- Arrangement of sentences
- Analogies
- Geometric figure analysis
- Judgment
- Vocabulary
- Logic
The Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test comes in two different formats:
1. Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Pretest – this test is not proctored. The test gives the employee an overall understanding of the candidate’s abilities.
- It is generally used as an initial step in the applicant’s recruitment process
- It may be used to see if the applicant is permitted to move on to the next step
- It comes with a time frame of 8 minutes
2. The Wonderlic Contemporary Cognitive Ability Test – this is an in-depth test. It is proctored. Some of the abilities that are measured are:
- Analytical abilities
- Skill at providing speedy responses
- Ability to make decisions under pressure
The Wonderlic Personality Test
The Wonderlic Personality Test assesses the personality characteristics of the applicant. The aim of the test is to predict whether or not a candidate is a good fit for the job.
- It gives employers an understanding of the candidate’s popular personality characteristics.
- It is used to predict job performance in a particular work position.
- Employers use this test to match applicants with the work positions that are suited.
- Employers see if an applicant’s personality traits are a good fit for the job positions they are applying for.
The Wonderlic Five-factor Personality Profile – assesses a candidate’s personality according to the five “primary dimensions”. These “primary dimensions” are commonly used as indicators of performance at work:
- Extraversion
- Agreeableness
- Conscientiousness
- Emotional Stability/Neuroticism
- Openness to Experience
The Wonderlic Seven-Factor Personality Profile – assesses a candidate’s personality according to seven personality dimensions:
- Emotional Intensity
- Assertiveness
- Trust
- Good Impression
- Intuition
- Recognition Motivation
- Sensitivity
The Wonderlic Skill Test
The Wonderlic Skill Tests give a quick overall assessment of the basic verbal and quantitative skills of the candidates. This test is designed to measure the readiness of an applicant, to work at an entry-level job. The aim is to minimize training time and turnover. This is done by finding candidates who can carry out the tasks of the position they are applying for.
Employees use this test in relation to any job that needs basic mathematical calculation skills. They may also use it to identify the oral and written communication of the test-taker.
The Wonderlic Skills Tests include:
- The Wonderlic Perceptual Ability Test – assesses a candidate’s ability to recall numerical and alphabetical information
- Wonderlic Basic Skills Test – assesses general verbal and mathematical skills
- Wonderlic Office and Software Skills Test – assesses basic software and computer skills
FAQ: All You Need to Know About the Wonderlic Test
The Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test is translated into 12 languages and is administered around the world. Generally, applicants are given 12 minutes to complete the test. They will be asked 50 multiple-choice questions. The questions increase in complexity as the candidate progresses through the test.
Applicants are not required to complete the test, however, it is recommended to complete as many questions as possible. Administration of the test may take place on-site, where it is overseen by a Wonderlic-train human resource staff member. Alternatively, the test could be administered at an approved location. A Wonderlic Independent Test Administrator will then oversee the test.
You are likely taking the Wonderlic Cognitive Ability test as part of the application process for employment. You could also be taking it to be accepted to a specific college. Typically, the employer or recruit who requested the test will also register you for the test.
Administration and registration of the exam will differ, as the test can take play anytime during the year. As there is no specific “testing date”, you should start using Wonderlic practice tests as soon as you find out that you need to complete a Wonderlic Test.
The Wonderlic test is generally not paid for by the applicant. Recruiters, employers, and others who requested the test are the ones who usually pay for it. However, there are cases where the applicant will need to pay. Wonderlic doesn’t publish its prices online. If you wish to know the price of a test you need to contact the sales department.
The Wonderlic test can be suited for any candidate for an entry-level position, college, or university. Or, for any purpose deemed appropriate by the employer or recruiter.
Each specific hiring company or organization will decide who needs to take the test. They will also decide at which point in the recruitment process the test will take place, and which test(s) must be taken.
The Wonderlic test generally features 50 multiple-choice questions. These questions get harder as the applicant progresses through the test. Applicants are given 12 minutes to complete the test. This gives them an average of just under 15 sections to complete each question.
Your score is calculated according to the total number of correct answers you get in the time given.
A score of 20 equals “average” intelligence.
The Wonderlic Scholastic Level Exam (or Wonderlic SLE in short) is a version of a cognitive ability test. The standard Wonderlic SLE test is specifically designed for colleges and universities. It contains 50 multiple-choice questions and lasts no more than 12 minutes and is meant to test how well you recognize patterns, process information, and solve problems while under pressure.
Wonscore is Wonderlic’s newest innovation–an all-in-one psychometrics package that combines Wonderlic Personnel Test, Wonderlic Personal Characteristics Inventory, and the Wonderlic Motivation Potential Assessment into one (“won”).
Wonderlic Wonscore is for businesses that need to improve their hiring process, reduce turnover, and boost productivity levels.
On the field, football players need to make good judgment calls, react to changing circumstances, solve complex problems, and think clearly while under pressure. While NFL (National Football League) players don’t work in an office, they use many of the same skills on a regular basis. Football requires an immense amount of concentration, spatial reasoning, and resourcefulness, all skills are tested on the Wonderlic.
While the Wonderlic was originally designed as a screening exam for employers hiring new staff members, it’s widely known for its use in the NFL draft. Wonderlic scores won’t necessarily affect an athlete’s chances during the draft, but they can supply a team with the information they wouldn’t have known from a resume or list of statistics.
The test is scored in a standard manner, which means that players’ scores can be compared to one another. Each position requires its own passing score: Offensive Tackle: 26
- Center: 25
- Quarterback: 24
- Guard: 23
- Tight end: 22
- Safety: 19
- Linebacker: 19
- Cornerback: 18
- Wide Receiver: 17
- Fullback: 17
- Halfback: 16
