What is the Suffolk County Hiring Process?

The path to embarking on a law enforcement career in Suffolk County is obvious.

The hiring process is as follows:

  • Complete and submit an application.
  • Complete and pass the Suffolk Police Exam EB Jacobs LEAB (Law Enforcement Aptitude Battery).
  • Stay on an eligibility list until you are recruited and hired as a Police Officer in Suffolk County.

The Suffolk County Police Exam

The Suffolk County police exam is an aptitude test utilized by the Suffolk County Police Department.

The exam follows the format of the EB Jacobs Law Enforcement Aptitude Battery (LEAB).

The Suffolk County Police test lets the county know whether or not the applicant has the capacity to function as a police officer. The test measures the applicant’s cognitive skills, work style, and behavioral tendencies and checks if they have a clean background record.

What Does the Suffolk County Police Exam Include?

The Suffolk County Police Exam follows the EB Jacobs LEAB. The test has three core components:

  • The Cognitive Ability Test
  • The Workstyles Questionnaire
  • The Life Experience Survey

Let’s take a look at each of these sections of the Suffolk County Police Exam:

The Suffolk County Police Exam Cognitive Ability Test

Test-takers will encounter six subjects in the first part of the Suffolk County police test and will have around 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete the exam.

These subjects are as follows:

Written Comprehension

This subject is included in the Suffolk County police test to measure the ability of an individual to read, hear, and understand the information given in the English language.

Written Expression

A Suffolk County officer needs to be able to communicate information and ideas effectively to his fellow officers and civilians, both through oral and written means.

As a result, this section is included in the Suffolk County Police test to see if the candidate has sufficient knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and word order.

Deductive Reasoning

In this subject, the candidate has to read a passage, normally something relating to state laws or policies of the Suffolk County Police Department, then analyze how these apply to the situation or question given following the passage.

Inductive Reasoning

This subject is similar to the deductive reasoning subject, but instead of full sentences/passages, the test taker will need to form a logical conclusion based on drawings, words, tables, charts, or even a set of objects.

In this part of the Suffolk County police test, the test-taker must determine or discover the common element, concept, rule, or sequence that they all share.

Information Ordering

This section of the Suffolk County police exam is used to measure the ability of applicants how they can logically sequence information.

Here, the test-taker will be presented with a number of statements that are placed in a random order, and they have to choose from the number of choices that is the correct sequence.

Problem Sensitivity

Also known as the Situational Judgement Test, this subject gauges if the test-taker can resolve a conflict or problem in a way that is expected of a police officer.

The Suffolk County Police Exam Work Style Questionnaire (WSQ)

The work styles questionnaire is a specialized personality-test type questionnaire utilized by the Suffolk County Police Department to gauge the personality of the candidate – to see if they are compatible with a law enforcement-type workplace environment.

Through this part of the Suffolk County police exam, the County Police will see if the applicant has the personality and work ethic of a police officer.

Specifically, the test taker will have to answer several questions or statements either through a Likert-like scale type format or through a multiple-choice format. When the questions are multiple-choice, the test-taker needs to state to what degree they agree or disagree with a given statement.

The Suffolk County Police Exam Life Experiences Survey

This section will take a good look at your entire work and personal history of the applicant and see if they are trustworthy enough to provide all the essential details without any hint of omission or falsification.

This helps the hiring department learn more about the past experiences that have shaped the applicant as a person and provide some insight into the community-mindedness and broader ethics of the applicant.

Suffolk County Police Exam: Scoring System

Each part of the Suffolk County Police Exam is scored separately. The scores received on each of the three sections are combined to create the test result. Applicants must pass the Suffolk County PD Exam to be added to the eligibility list for officer vacancies. The “pass” mark is 70.

What Makes the Suffolk County Police Exam So Difficult?

  • Apart from the subject matter contained within it, what makes the test difficult is its timed nature.
  • In addition to being a difficult and extensive assessment test, the Suffolk County police test is timed as it follows the EB James LEAB format. It has a time limit of 2 hours and 30 minutes.
  • You must be well prepared to tackle this exam. In addition, you need to have the right approach for each of the subjects contained within the Suffolk County Police Exam.
